"I offer you peace. I offer you love. I offer you friendship. I see your beauty. I hear your need. I feel your feelings. My wisdom flows from the Highest Source. I salute that Source in you. Let us work together for unity and love.” ~Gandhi
Although I have practiced yoga asanas (postures/poses) for a decade, it was through my teaching training that I began studying the philosophy of yoga.
One meaning of the word yoga is "to attain what was previously unattainable." In other words, there are things we are unable to do today; when we find our way to accomplishing our desires, THAT is yoga.* In terms of a physical yoga practice, one may desire to do a specific asana, become more flexible or balanced, or achieve a relaxed state.
The purpose of yoga is to unify the body, breath, and mind through asana (postures), pranayama (breath work) and meditation. Asanas are typically the primary focus of a Western yoga practice. It is my objective as an instructor to provide students a balanced practice encompassing both sthira and sukha. Sthira is "steadiness and alertness." Sukha refers to "the ability to remain comfortable in a posture."*
The pose begins when you want to leave it.” ~anonymous
Perhaps more important though, is my dedication to providing a safe space for my students to discover their personal needs and desires - physical, emotional, spiritual - and an opportunity for achieving them.
